Callista Gingrich campaigns on her own for her husband, Newt Gingrich.
ATLANTA -- Callista Gingrich is stepping out on her own to try to widen the reach and appeal of her husband's campaign for the Republican nomination for president.
While former House Speaker Newt Gingrich attended a precinct meeting in Gwinnett County on Saturday, Mrs. Gingrich made a solo appearance as a guest of the Atlanta Young Republican Club at Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Buckhead.
"When she has a chance to get in front of crowds, Republican women, in particular, are really drawn to her," said political analyst Patricia Murphy, who covered the speech for her non-partisan website for women, CitizenJanePolitics.com.
Saturday's speech was part of a new strategy to give Mrs. Gingrich a higher profile apart from her husband, who did well with women voters in South Carolina but has really struggled since.
"So the Gingrich campaign is trying to not only put forward a more positive message from Newt Gingrich, but also have Mrs. Gingrich out there, talking to women voters, presenting a more human face," Murphy said.
The speech focused on American history with a little personal history mixed in.
"We're in this together," Mrs. Gingrich said of her husband's Republican rivals. "Our only opponent is Barack Obama, and we are committed to removing him from the White House."
