WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- The annual "Make A Difference Day" is the largest national day of helping others. More than 100 volunteers are planning to help J.C. Nalle Elementary.
"We have a lot of friends in this school. A lot of helpers that volunteer to help us," said Pierre Brown, 10 years old.
Brown and his fellow classmates said they love their school, but it needs a makeover.
"It's really getting old," Brown said.
"Some students in our school peel off the paint so we need our walls painted again," said Charnay Casson, 9 years old.
Volunteers from HandsOn Greater DC Cares dropped off supplies Friday. Volunteers are going to spend their day painting the hallways in the classrooms, creating murals, and organizing the library. Outside, they'll work on landscaping.
The students are excited but they also have some ideas of their own.
"If we could have lunch in our classrooms, that would be great... I just want to spend more time with my teacher," said Brown.
"We need new windows, more air conditioners. In 106, the air conditioner is [broken] so it's really hot in there," said Casson.
Many of the volunteers coming out to help are from Gannett, WUSA 9's parent company. More than 3 million people are expected to participate across the country.
"Gannett's USA Weekend Magazine started this day in 1992 and we've been helping hundreds of millions of people through the Make ADifference Day over the years," said Sandra Micek, Gannett.
"Thank you to all the people volunteering," said Casson.
"I appreciate what they are going to do for our school," said Chantel Whitley, 10 years old.
