ATLANTA -- Schools in Union and Towns counties will start two hours late Wednesday. Rabun County and Gilmer County Schools will open on time.

Students in all four counties got an extra day of winter break Tuesday after snow and ice on the roads forced schools to remain closed.

Gilmer County school officials told 11Alive News that they have drastic elevation differences in the county, particularly to the north and east. There were several accidents in the eastern parts of the county, where powdery snow had covered up ice.

That was one of the reasons why the county cancelled classes Tuesday. They did not want to risk getting buses and teen drivers on those slick roads.

There was no snow to keep kids from returning to school in Cherokee, Henry and Gwinnett counties Tuesday. Bus drivers their began preparing for Tuesday's chilly ride to school on Monday.
