Mars Inc. to phase out king-size candy bars

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ -- (USA TODAY) Mars Inc. is putting Snickers on a diet. The candy maker says it is phasing out the king-size versions of popular chocolate bars like Mars and Snickers, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The newspaper says the company plans to stop shipping bars that contain more than 250 calories by the end of 2013.

A king-size Snickers contains 510 calories. Even the regular-size version packs a whopping 280 calories.

"Mars has a broad-based commitment to health and nutrition, and this includes a number of global initiatives," the company said in a statement, the Tribune reports.

The company's chocolate brands include Snickers, Twix, M&Ms, 3 Musketeers, Mars, Milky Way, Dove and Galaxy.
