Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Kent Bazemore led the way with 19 points as the
Old Dominion Monarchs picked up a 65-60 overtime victory over the Georgia
State Panthers in a Colonial Athletic Association thriller at GSU Sports
Arena.
For the Monarchs (19-11.13-4 CAA), Dimitri Batten added 13 points, while Chris
Cooper notched a double-double with 11 points and 17 rebounds.
Jihad Ali led the Panthers (19-10, 10-7) with 20 points, while Devonta White
finished with 12 points, James Fields chipped in 10 points and Eric Buckner
pulled down 10 rebounds.
Georgia State shot well right out of the gate, connecting on 50 percent of
their field goals, including 3-of-7 from three-point range in the first half.
ODU managed just 38.2 percent from the floor, including only 3-of-11 from
beyond the arc, as the Panthers led at the break, 34-31.
After halftime, both teams had trouble finding the basket. The Panthers made
just 31.8 percent of their field goals. The Monarchs shot even worse, hitting
on only 19.4 percent of their shots from the field. The Panthers led 54-51
before Bazemore hit a three-pointer to tie it with just over two minutes left.
Ali made two free throws to put Georgia State back on top, but Batten scored
on a layup and the Monarchs held Georgia State scoreless over the final minute
to push the game into overtime with the score knotted up at 56-56.
ODU took control in the extra period, going ahead 61-56, while holding the
Panthers scoreless for over four minutes. A Jihad three-pointer with 38
seconds left cut ODU's lead to 61-60, but the Panthers would not score
again as the Monarchs held on for the victory.
ODU outscored Georgia State 23-13 on second chance points. The Monarchs owned
the boards, outrebounding the Panthers 52-39.
